Chinese for Social Sciences

'Chinese for social sciences' is in fact 'Chinese language for Social Sciences’, a branch of 'Chinese for Specific Purposes' (CSP), like 'Chinese for science and technology' or 'business Chinese'. In responding to demands from users of our bilingual websites CCPN Global is developing a supplementary course material based on our research work and publications in both English and Chinese. 'The Chinese for Social Sciences’ will also be developed having expertise in network and relationship research, derived from longitudinal studies in rural China and comparative studies elsewhere. It would provide a key to understanding Chinese society and Chinese people. It aims at serving the purposes of providing better understanding on basic knowledge on China and improving students' and scholars' language skills in English or Chinese on social science issues.

In 2013 CCPN Global decided to publish Journal of China in Comparative Perspective (JCCP), the only peer-reviewed journal for social scientific studies of China in the world, as a bilingual quarterly journal from 2014. A column 'Chinese for social sciences' will be set up in the journal. CCPN Global is also developing a long term research project ''Chinese language for Social Science' with language experts: Ms Lik Suen, Deputy Director of the London Confucius Institute (LCI), Dr Lianyi Song, Principal Teaching Fellow, Department of the Languages and Cultures of China and Inner Asia, SOAS, University of London. Currently we are working in the following fields:

I. Reading: Intermediate and advanced levels of reading material are derived from articles will be published in the column of Journal of China in Comparative Perspective.

1. Chinese for social science - Intermediate level reading

2. Chinese for social science - Advanced level reading

LSE's knowledge transfer expertise and research excellence was recognized by the Higher Education Innovation Fund (HEIF) in 2004. From 2006 to 07 LSE's CCPN has participated in workshops run by the ESRC Knowledge Transfer Team, such as 'Getting Research into Practice (GRIP)', and 'Engaging with Business'. A bilingual website, the only bilingual title for social scientific studies on China in the English speaking world, was built in 2008, which is a part of CCPN's knowledge transfer activities. It aims at promoting understanding of meanings behind the Chinese and English languages, especially within cultural and academic contexts, which can be seen as a part of Chinese knowledge for social science.

In 2009 the British Academy launched a report entitled ‘Language matters’ which 'discussed concerns that the future of the UK’s world class research base might be threatened by the decline in modern language learning and calls for a series of measures by Universities and Government bodies to address this danger’. In 2011 the British Academy launched its new statement ‘Language matters more and more’. The question of how to ‘build the capacity of the UK’s knowledge economy to meet national and international challenges’ is relevant here not because of language learning, but to gain better understanding of the meanings behind English and Chinese languages within various social, cultural and economic contexts.

At the 2011 Language Show Live CCPN signed a form to support the Speak to the Future's campaign, which was funded by the British Academy as part of its Language and Quantitative Skills Programme.

It is expected that CCPN Global's edited volumes and book series will continue to be published in dual languages from 2013.
